Steven Universe is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar. It is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and is the first Cartoon Network show to be created by a woman. It has received critical acclaim for the diversity and deep characterization of its characters; its portrayal of relationships, including queer relationships; and subversion of stereotypical gender norms , along with its art style, voice acting, music, and storytelling. The titular protagonist of the series, Steven Universe voiced by Zach Callison is the youngest and only male member of the Crystal Gems. His characterization is loosely inspired by series creator Rebecca Sugar's younger brother Steven Sugar, a background artist for the show. Rose is described as having "given up her physical form to bring [Steven] into the world" as the first Gem-human hybrid, and her gemstone is embedded in his navel.
He debuted in the Pilot , with his first canon appearance in " Gem Glow ". Lars was previously a normal human, before his abduction to the Gem Homeworld , where he died and was resurrected by Steven 's healing powers. As a result of his revival, Lars was turned pink and given his own set of magical Gem -like abilities. Since his revival, Lars has taken up the role of a captain, with the Off Colors as his crew, to rebel against the Gem Homeworld and escape the planet to reach Earth. Within Steven Universe Future , he owns and worked at his own bakery called Spacetries.
Finally, another space adventure! Lars is now a hyper-competent, dashing, smirking space captain with a cool cape, having used his organic invisibility to steal a prototype Gem ship—crewed by the off-color Gems—and commit space crime until he and the others are on a course for Earth. You can feel how much fun storyboard artists and writers Lamar Abrams and Lauren Zuke are having with this conceit, as they give each member of the crew a snappy title card showing off their new job. One pilot.
